Comparing the methods

Typical LMS reports

After a compliance training roll-out, an LMS will typically provide the following information for each learner: start time, end time, total time, score, completion.

The problem with this model is that anyone can easily feed fake information into the LMS, thus invalidating the value of such reports. This exposes companies to various risks.

LearnerLogs help companies raise the quality and quantity of evidence they collect and retain to prove that staff have taken the relevant trainings and passed the appropriate assessments. In particular, LearnerLogs deliver two unique benefits:

Reliability

Instead of using client-side reported learning data (SCORM or Tin Can) which can be easily faked, LearnerLogs rely on Salt’s server-side architecture to collect, assess, and store learner actions and responses.

Completeness

Instead of relying on binary yes/no completion data, LearnerLogs provide the full, timestamped history of learner actions (moving to the next slide, answering a question, etc.) during taking a course.

This means that during regulatory audits or legal investigations, instead of saying “John Smith (probably) completed the training on 5 May 2014", the compliance team can pick any employee, any course and just “replay” that particular person’s training to the regulators, second by second, based on data that is actually reliable.

This cloud-based platform allows course management while remaining compatible with existing LMS.

As a web-application, the platform consists of different but tightly integrated parts.

While our in-house content development team uses the core authoring module to build your courses, you can access everything you need from a single interface: our customer dashboard.

About the dashboard

During the lifecycle of a course, most customers want to test-drive different course versions, review and update content, download a SCORM package for your LMS, and access analytics. That's what our dashboard is for - it allows you to do all of these from a single place.

Test-driving courses

Compared to most traditional e-learning vendors, we believe in a far more agile, iterative course development process. Instead of spending weeks drafting storyboards, we like to prototype a course, let you try it out and then rapidly iterate on structure, content, assessments, adaptivity and style.

To facilitate this process, you can always use the dashboard to take the latest version of any course. Edits by both you and us are incorporated and available in real time.

Light editing

The most frustrating part of building a course is the last 30%. Typically, this time consists of a long series of small tweaks to style, language, questions etc, often passed back and forth in endless files with annotations.

Salt has drastically simplified this process. Our light editing interface allows you and other reviewers to view the entire course as one long page, make changes, and then immediately take the updated course.

Managing translations

Managing the translation process for multi-language courses has traditionally been a frustrating, error-prone, time-consuming process.

With Salt, once we've imported agency translations, your internal reviewers can use the multi-language version of our light-editing interface to compare the courses side-by-side and make changes on the spot.

SCORM wrapper for your LMS

Salt courses are SCORM compatible. To add the course to your LMS, simply download a SCORM wrapper from the dashboard to enable your learners to access the course on our platform.

No special integration is required — for LMS admins and learners alike, the experience with uploading, launching, and reporting completion is exactly the same as with a traditional course.

Analytics and visualisations

Once you've released the course, you can access learning analytics and visualisations from the dashboard.

If you're launching the course from your LMS, you continue to receive simple analytics (completion, date, score) there. In addition, however, you can now access more advanced and detailed analytics on Salt, including topic breakdowns like time to completion or number of reviews, performance on assessments, or variation in behaviour by language.

LMS integration

This page explains how courses powered by the Salt Adaptive platform work with your LMS. The short version is that for both LMS administrators and learners, everything works just like with traditional courses.

Administrators get a SCORM package which they upload onto the LMS. The package functions like any other, including getting completion data into the LMS.

Learners launch the course from the LMS and see the completion marked in their transcript on the LMS when they are finished.

The only difference between traditional courses and Salt courses is where their learning logic actually runs.

Traditional courses are entirely downloaded to the learner's computer (client side) whereas Salt courses run on our Salt Adaptive platform (server side).

Historically, most courses have been built as effectively self-contained websites. When a learner takes such a course, their computer downloads the entire course. Then, at the very end, the course sends a message to the LMS saying “I'm done here.”

At the start, the learner's computer downloads the entire course from the LMS.

The course is self-contained, and thus doesn't really communicate with the server during the learning interaction. Everything happens inside the learner's browser.

At the end, the course sends a completion message to the LMS.

In the modern server-side architecture, the learning content itself isn't a self-contained website, but is instead hosted on and powered by a learning server (e.g. Salt Adaptive), which itself is independent of (but connected to) the LMS.

While this model may seem more complicated, this is what enables powerful authoring and editing, adaptive learning, scalable translations, analytics, etc. Importantly, this setup happens entirely in the background — neither administrators nor learners see any difference.

At the start, the learner's computer loads the course wrapper from the LMS. This wrapper points to Salt Adaptive and loads the course from there.The course is dynamic, i.e. the entire learner interaction is dynamically controlled and adapted through continuous communication between the learner's computer (or smartphone, tablet) and Salt Adaptive.

We model the learner's knowledge on individual questions and concepts based on what they've read, how they answer questions, etc. All such actions are recorded and can be analysed or audited.

Once Salt marks the course as finished, the course wrapper sends a completion message to the LMS.
