Salt Adaptive

We are dedicated to providing high-quality products and responsive, client-focused service. Through our training products and services, we aim to help solve real compliance and learning problems for real people and organisations.

Every organisation needs a robust platform to deliver, manage and report on their compliance training experiences. Whether you already have a learning management system (LMS) or need a new platform, our team can help.

Salt Adaptive is built for any organisation type from small and medium-sized entities to larger and multinational enterprises.

We helped American Express to achieve an average of 27 minutes to complete their AML training for over 110,000 learners, down from 57 minutes through the use of Salt Adaptive’s pre-test feature. This half-hour reduction provides huge opportunity cost savings.

Secure compliance training

With the spread of more powerful web browsers and fewer restrictions around devices and access, it has become easy to skip compliance training but still report full completion to the LMS.

Firms that need reliable records for boards, regulators, and law enforcement eliminate this security loophole by using courses that run on the Salt Platform but still work with their LMS.

Unlike traditional courses that generate LMS reports that are often inconclusive in nature and limited in scope, Salt LearnerLogs provide records that are both more detailed and fully reliable, i.e. resilient against such hacks.

If you are responsible for training that carries legal implications, such as in compliance, safety, or medical training, Salt courses with LearnerLogs can help you capture reliable training evidence and eliminate this risk.

If you want to talk to an expert about your evidence reporting, give us a call or complete the form and we'll be in touch soon.

Comparing the methods

Typical LMS reports

After a compliance training roll-out, an LMS will typically provide the following information for each learner: start time, end time, total time, score, completion.

The problem with this model is that anyone can easily feed fake information into the LMS, thus invalidating the value of such reports. This exposes companies to various risks.

Salt LearnerLogs

LearnerLogs help companies raise the quality and quantity of evidence they collect and retain to prove that staff have taken the relevant trainings and passed the appropriate assessments. In particular, LearnerLogs deliver two unique benefits:

Reliability

Instead of using client-side reported learning data (SCORM or Tin Can) which can be easily faked, LearnerLogs rely on Salt’s server-side architecture to collect, assess, and store learner actions and responses.

Completeness

Instead of relying on binary yes/no completion data, LearnerLogs provide the full, timestamped history of learner actions (moving to the next slide, answering a question, etc.) during taking a course.

This means that during regulatory audits or legal investigations, instead of saying “John Smith (probably) completed the training on 5 May 2014", the compliance team can pick any employee, any course and just “replay” that particular person’s training to the regulators, second by second, based on data that is actually reliable.

Example LearnerLog

The above screenshot shows what a typical LearnerLog looks like — it is effectively a feed that describes how someone completed the course, from switching between slides to answering each question and reviewing hints.

Why Salt Adaptive?

Benefits of Salt Adaptive

By integrating our proprietary technology with production services, our courses outperform alternatives during all three parts of the course lifecycle: development, learning and evaluation.

In addition, if you need to accumulate reliable and complete training evidence, Salt courses offer significantly higher security than courses built using traditional client-side approaches.

Lower total cost of ownership

Changing a few words in a course shouldn't take a week and cost a fortune.Similarly, managing multiple language versions shouldn't be a full-time job in itself. When working with us, you get reliability, quality, and speed.

Short iteration cycles and time to delivery

To build a course, you shouldn't have to keep emailing files or storyboards back and forth between everyone for months. We build courses by prototyping in real-time. This makes the process faster and easier for you.

Simple deployment – just upload our course to your LMS

To roll-out our course, just upload it to your existing Learning Management System (LMS), like you would with any others. Salt courses are fully SCORM compatible.

Salt courses are more effective

Learners who like courses pay more attention and so learn more. In addition, the same personalisation that leads to higher engagement also boosts retention. For example, our adaptive courses ensure that problematic areas are reviewed more than once.

Learners like Salt courses more

The success of the e-learning depends on the learning experience. Our courses have modern design and are adaptive, i.e. they personalise themselves automatically to each learner. This means that people actually like taking them.

Salt courses work on any device

Start a course at your desk and continue on your tablet or smartphone on the train? Picking up exactly where you left off? Absolutely. Salt courses work on all screen sizes (desktop, tablet, smartphone) and platforms (web, iOS, Android).

Understand more about your learners than ever before

After rolling out a Salt course, you can analyse an unparalleled range of data points that explain how your staff learnt the content and performed on assessments. Find out what grabs their attention, the questions they struggled with, and compare those patterns across your company.

Use visualisation to discover key insights

To help you get the most out of our advanced learning analytics, we also provide a suite of visualisation tools that help you analyse and understand the data in a way that's both effective and easy to use.

Calculate accurate ROI and improve budget allocation

How can you calculate ROI on e-learning if the only data point you get is whether people took the course or not? We agree, you can't. That's why we provide a range of statistics that help you identify the courses that are working and discover why.

Resilient against SCORM hacks

By modelling learner's knowledge based on individual responses, Salt determines completion in a way that cannot be hacked - unlike traditional SCORM courses.

More reliable training evidence

Instead of using exclusively client-side reported learning data (e.g. SCORM) which can be easily faked, Salt LearnerLogs rely on our server-side architecture to collect, assess and store learner actions and responses.

More complete training evidence

Instead of relying on binary yes/no completion data, Salt LearnerLogs provide the full, timestamped history of learner actions (moving to the next slide, answering a question, etc.).

Languages

Perhaps your workforce is culturally and linguistically diverse. Salt Adaptive can cater to your multilingual requirements, enabling individual learners to select the language in which they view training at any point in time.

Languages are built into a single course and exported via a single SCORM file. An Author easily imports language packs

Salt Adaptive Platform

Salt courses are built on, powered by and analysed using our Salt Adaptive platform.

This cloud-based platform allows course management while remaining compatible with existing LMS.

Our course platform enables effective, fast creation of courses that provide a consistent, adaptive learning experience across all platforms and devices, generate advanced analytics, and are easily maintainable, even in multiple languages.

As a web-application, the platform consists of different but tightly integrated parts.

While our in-house content development team uses the core authoring module to build your courses, you can access everything you need from a single interface: our customer dashboard.

About the dashboard

During the lifecycle of a course, most customers want to test-drive different course versions, review and update content, download a SCORM package for your LMS, and access analytics. That's what our dashboard is for - it allows you to do all of these from a single place.

Test-driving courses

Compared to most traditional e-learning vendors, we believe in a far more agile, iterative course development process. Instead of spending weeks drafting storyboards, we like to prototype a course, let you try it out and then rapidly iterate on structure, content, assessments, adaptivity and style.

To facilitate this process, you can always use the dashboard to take the latest version of any course. Edits by both you and us are incorporated and available in real time.

Light editing

The most frustrating part of building a course is the last 30%. Typically, this time consists of a long series of small tweaks to style, language, questions etc, often passed back and forth in endless files with annotations.

Salt has drastically simplified this process. Our light editing interface allows you and other reviewers to view the entire course as one long page, make changes, and then immediately take the updated course.

Managing translations

Managing the translation process for multi-language courses has traditionally been a frustrating, error-prone, time-consuming process.

With Salt, once we've imported agency translations, your internal reviewers can use the multi-language version of our light-editing interface to compare the courses side-by-side and make changes on the spot.

SCORM wrapper for your LMS

Salt courses are SCORM compatible. To add the course to your LMS, simply download a SCORM wrapper from the dashboard to enable your learners to access the course on our platform.

No special integration is required — for LMS admins and learners alike, the experience with uploading, launching, and reporting completion is exactly the same as with a traditional course.

Analytics and visualisations

Once you've released the course, you can access learning analytics and visualisations from the dashboard.

If you're launching the course from your LMS, you continue to receive simple analytics (completion, date, score) there. In addition, however, you can now access more advanced and detailed analytics on Salt, including topic breakdowns like time to completion or number of reviews, performance on assessments, or variation in behaviour by language.

LMS integration

This page explains how courses powered by the Salt Adaptive platform work with your LMS. The short version is that for both LMS administrators and learners, everything works just like with traditional courses.

Administrators get a SCORM package which they upload onto the LMS. The package functions like any other, including getting completion data into the LMS.

Learners launch the course from the LMS and see the completion marked in their transcript on the LMS when they are finished.

The only difference between traditional courses and Salt courses is where their learning logic actually runs.

Traditional courses are entirely downloaded to the learner's computer (client side) whereas Salt courses run on our Salt Adaptive platform (server side).

Historically, most courses have been built as effectively self-contained websites. When a learner takes such a course, their computer downloads the entire course. Then, at the very end, the course sends a message to the LMS saying “I'm done here.”

At the start, the learner's computer downloads the entire course from the LMS.

The course is self-contained, and thus doesn't really communicate with the server during the learning interaction. Everything happens inside the learner's browser.

At the end, the course sends a completion message to the LMS.

In the modern server-side architecture, the learning content itself isn't a self-contained website, but is instead hosted on and powered by a learning server (e.g. Salt Adaptive), which itself is independent of (but connected to) the LMS.

While this model may seem more complicated, this is what enables powerful authoring and editing, adaptive learning, scalable translations, analytics, etc. Importantly, this setup happens entirely in the background — neither administrators nor learners see any difference.

At the start, the learner's computer loads the course wrapper from the LMS. This wrapper points to Salt Adaptive and loads the course from there. The course is dynamic, i.e. the entire learner interaction is dynamically controlled and adapted through continuous communication between the learner's computer (or smartphone, tablet) and Salt Adaptive.

We model the learner's knowledge on individual questions and concepts based on what they've read, how they answer questions, etc. All such actions are recorded and can be analysed or audited.

Once Salt marks the course as finished, the course wrapper sends a completion message to the LMS.

Salt analytics offer powerful insights into learner knowledge and performance.
